MOF-199 is a well-studied metal-organic framework (MOF) for the capture of small gas molecules. Here, we have investigated the thermal conversion route of MOF-199 to CuO nanoparticles by various analytical techniques. The growth of oxide was initiated by the formation of ∼2.5 nm particles at 200 °C, which served as the seed for the formation of CuO nanoparticles of ∼100–250 nm size at 550 °C. An intermediate stage of CuO+Cu<sub>2</sub>O was confirmed at 280 °C. This thermal conversion of MOF-199 severely impacted the surface and functional properties, which were examined for the room-temperature desulfurization process. The MOF-199 and the calcined product at 280 °C showed similar H2S adsorption characteristics, whereas, the products at 200 °C and 550 °C had significantly low adsorption capacity due to poor surface and pore characteristics.
