Despite the sophistication of medical devices, repair and replacement of tissues remains a challenge. Biologically-derived materials are currently being used to restore defects but include varied degradation kinetics and possible transfer of pathogens. The research provided a mesh implant with the benefits of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and a synthetically-derived surgical mesh. This need includes a mesh material which is biocompatible, resorbable, offers tailored engineered mechanical properties, and has desirable handling properties. The implant was comprised of a base layer, a 1st fibrous, and a 2nd fibrous layer. An elastomeric film was fixed to a rotating collector drum. Solution 1 of Stratoprene® 3534 and solution 2 of Dioxaprene® 100M were prepared in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP). The solutions were dispensed with 20G spinnerets and a voltage supply. They were dispensed at ratio of 1:2, by volumetric flow. The first layer exhibited fiber diameters in the range of 2-10 um and bonded the 1st and 3rd layers. After 1hr deposition, the deposition rates were reduced and exhibited fiber diameters in the range of 0.8-10um. The implant device was evaluated for physical and mechanical properties, results in Table 1. Tissue integration and adhesion potential of the implant was assessed in a rabbit model (female, NZW, 3-3.5kg). In this procedure, the implant was placed with the fibrous layer on intact peritoneum and the base in contact with the viscera or subcutaneous tissue. Samples exhibited tissue ingrowth into the peritoneum with the fibrous layer and minimal adhesions with the viscera, as seen in In Vivo Response.
