Redox switching of the catalytic performance of zinc complexes with the redox-active formazanate ligand is described. The catalytic activity in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide is turned on when the parent (neutral) zinc alkoxide undergoes one-electron reduction. EPR and UV-Vis spectroscopic studies provide evidence that the switching occurs by changes in the ligand oxidation state. Characterization of the polymers and kinetic studies will be discussed to delineate mechanistic details. Fully reversible switching between the ‘on’ and ‘off’ states is achieved by in-situ reduction/oxidation, demonstrating a novel type of ligand-based redox-switchable polymerization catalysis.
