Chemistry Education Research CER had its origins in the early scholarship on the subject and has evolved into a robust area of discipline-based education research.  CER has grown in scope , accompanied by an evolution of topics, methods, and rigor.  The area achieved higher status when chemistry departments recognized it by hiring faculty with the expertise, began creating CER departmental divisions, and offered graduate students the opportunity to earn doctorates.  The presentation will follow the development of the area, its scholarship and research, and the award winner since the early 1990s.
