The formation of dimeric heterometallic complexes and their subsequent cleavage into monomeric components is of interest within this study. The dimer [Pd(dppf)(μ2-Cl)]2[BArF24]2 (dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene; BArF24 = tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate) was broken upon addition of PPh3 to yield the monomer [Pd(dppf)Cl(PPh3)][BArF24], which was confirmed by 31P NMR and X-ray crystallography. Further reactions involving dimers with a variety of bis(phosphino)ferrocene ligands, including 1,1'-bis(diiso-propylphosphino)ferrocene (dippf), 1,1'-bis(dicylohexylphosphino)ferrocene (dcpf), 1-diphenylphosphino-1'-ditert- butylphosphinoferrocene (dppdtbpf) and 1,1′-bis(5-methyl-2-furanylphosphino)ferrocene (dfurpf), complexed to the Pd center introduced varying electronic and steric parameters that affected the degree to which the dimers undergo cleavage upon addition of PPh3. Similar reactions were attempted utilizing other monodentate phosphine ligands with varying electronic and steric properties, including PMe3 and PCy3 (Cy = cyclohexyl). The redox properties of the resulting monomeric [Pd(PP)ClPR3][BArF24] species were examined using cyclic voltammetry and the X-ray crystal structures of several of the new compounds were determined.
