Heavy metals, such as Cd, are considered a pollutant in soil because of the health risk they pose in the environment. Plants naturally bioaccumulate metals from the soil, and many plants, such as Mentha Aquatica, have been discovered to retain high concentrations of Cd. This presentation gives work towards testing the phytoremediation of Cd in another mint species, Mentha Spicata. The translocation factor and bioconcentration factor are used to evaluate the movement of Cd from soil into the roots, stem, and leaves of the plant. Nitric acid digestion and ion-column HPLC analysis have been used to determine the concentration of Cd in the plant.
