Synthesis methods result in residual PFAS in commercial fluoropolymers. These fluoropolymers are further processed into finished goods through extrusion.  This presentation will describe the possible pathways for the residual PFAS during melt fluoropolymer processing.  The PFAS has three possible fates: it can be volatilized, chemically converted, or remain within the finished fluoropolymer. During extrusion, the balance of three factors determines the fate of the PFAS from melt fluoropolymer processing:  The air movement within the extruder prior to sealing, the diffusion of the PFAS within the polymer, and the partition of the PFAS between the solid and air fraction.  Each of these mechanisms will be explored and a case study for a fluoropolymer will be presented.
