Self-replication within a molecular system can be achieved by covalently attaching two complementary compounds to form a larger, self-complementary template molecule. We introduce a new template design that deviates from biotic-inspired hydrogen-bonding interactions, and instead operates through chalcogen bonding. Our synthetic strategy and progress toward a template structure that is based on repeating 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole units is presented.
