More recently, peracetic acid (PAA)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are promising for green remediation of chemical and microbiological micropollutants from water and wastewater. Homogeneous activation of PAA has been proved useful for pollutant degradation relying on key reactive species of carbon-centered radicals (●R-C) and hydroxyl radicals (●OH). However, the radicals-dominated systems usually suffer from poor resistance towards actual water matrixes. Non-radical pathway based on the electron transfer process can avoid this obstacle efficiently, whereas its reusability is also restrained by the intermediates of contaminants adsorbed on the surface of catalysts. Thus, the combination of radical and non-radical pathway may greatly solve the above problems. Carbonaceous materials-driven AOPs with PAA have been poorly investigated in water and wastewater treatment so far, and the underlying regime is still obscure. To this end, this study was dedicated to unveiling the feasibility, and sustainability of carbon nanotube (CNT) to activate PAA towards bisphenol A (BPA) removal. Integrating selective quenching tests, radical trapping, electrochemical analysis, and in-situ Raman spectra, both radical reactive species including ●OH and ●R-C and non-radical pathway based on an electron transfer regime via CNT-PAA* complex were found to be responsible for BPA degradation. Moreover, the CNT/PAA system exhibited excellent reusability after four cycles. This study gains new insights into the radical and non-radical oxidations by nanocarbons for PAA activation and provides feasible technologies for micropollutants purification.
