Usually absent in the bloodstream, cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is released during an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) as cardiac muscle is damaged. Detection of elevated troponin levels in the bloodstream can indicate a recent or ongoing AMI. While current detection methods of cTnI levels are often expensive with a slow turn-around time, providing quick and reliable detection of cTnI is crucial for early detection of an AMI, which could ultimately improve the patient's prognosis. Point-of-care (POC) testing involves using a small sample to perform rapid and accurate analyte detection for quick diagnosis and efficient patient treatment. One such POC testing method is the use of lateral flow assays (LFAs). LFAs provide a low-cost, rapid diagnostic testing method without the need for specialized training. Protein detection, such as for cTnI, using LFAs involves using antigen-antibody complexes and metallic, commonly gold, nanoparticles (AuNP). Analysis of the results involves observing a colorimetric change at the strip's test line and control line. Using a five-fold concentrated AuNP immobilized with an anti-troponin I antibody and blocked with bovine serum albumin (BSA), an LFA was designed with the ability to detect troponin in concentrations as low as 50 ng/mL. Developing a lateral flow assay for cTnI provides patients with a quick turn-around diagnosis for more efficient treatment and potentially improved prognosis.
