Dearomatization strategies have recently come into focus as a powerful approach to convert planar aromatic cores into stereogenic centers or to install functionality to serve as a chemical handle for further synthetic modification. Recently in our laboratory, a dearomatization of 2-naphthol was observed using an organic dye catalyst as a chlorine transfer agent. In this investigation, we have developed a dearomatization reaction of substituted 2-naphthol derivatives that is more atom-economical than our previously reported system by screening a variety of green solvents and reagents. Our progress toward the optimization of the novel dearomatization reaction and initial expansion of a substrate scope will be presented and discussed.
