New copper(II) complexes were synthesized by the reaction of dichloro(1,10-phenanthroline)copper(II) and nitrogen-based ligands including acetamide, isonicotinamide, imidazole, 4-pyridinecarbonitrile and theophylline. In all complexes the inner coordination sphere contains one 1,10-phenanthroline as ancillary ligand and at least one nitrogen-based ligands. Mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction were used to determine the structure of new compounds. The <i>in vitro</i> cytotoxic activity of these new complexes against MCF-7 breast cancer cells will be reported and compare to that of other known metal complexes to establish their potential as antitumor drugs.
