Rotaxane derivatives have contributed to the development of various molecular machines. We reported the formation of [3]pseudorotaxanes based on 24-crown-8 (24C8), dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) and dinaphtho-24-crown-8 (DN24C8) with diphenylviologen (A1, Figure). Interestingly, the combination of A1 and DB24C8 or DN24C8 exhibits positive cooperativity (4K2 &gt; K1) during the formation, whereas negative cooperativity was demonstrated in the complexation of A1 and 24C8. In this study, we clarified the difference of cooperativity between 3 crown ethers by the conformation search of these species and quantum chemistry calculation with solvent effect. We indicated that the formation energies for [3]pseudorotaxanes (K2) consisting of DB24C8 and DN24C8 are larger than those for [2]pseudorotaxanes (K1).
