Copper nitrene complexes are often invoked as intermediates in useful catalytic reactions, however little remains known about these rare species. We sought to synthesize one such complex using a supporting ligand that contains two guanidine donors and an electron rich iron center. Introduction of copper(I) triflate to a known bis(guanidinyl)ferrocene ligand afforded a copper(I) complex. It was found when the copper complex was treated with a nitrene source at –70 °C, a new species was formed, as monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy. Details of this reaction and of the new compelxes syntheiszed here will be presented.
