Organoborons are highly useful intermediates in organic synthesis due to their remarkable versatility to participate in a variety of C-C and C-X bond formation reactions. In contrast to the tremendous advances made in the chemistry of aromatic and vinylic borons, acylborons represent an underexplored class of compounds whose existence and remarkable synthetic utility is beginning to emerge only recently. We have developed new approaches that enabled the synthesis of several previously inaccessible multifunctional acylborons and the related alpha-hydroxy borons. These organoborons were found to open-up general routes to various types of biologically important organic compounds.
