Dirhodium complexes have long been studied for use in a variety of applications due to their rich excited state photochemistry. Currently, they are of great interest for use in clean energy fuels production applications because they are either powerful photo reductants or photo oxidants. This allows for the use of light to generate an excited state species, and participate in electron and energy transfer to other substrates. These dirhodium complexes we reported not only absorb panchromatic spectrum, have long excited-state lifetimes but also function as catalysts for hydrogen production. The metal hydride species generated in the process of hydrogen production is of interest to us. The investigation of the hydricity of these hydride species directs us to design a better dirhodium catalyst that can utilize weak acids as proton sources to produce hydrogen in mild aqueous conditions.
