Conjugated polymeric electrochemical memristors (cPECMs) are a promising alternative towards next generation bioinspired circuitry, such as memristive neuromorphic computers. Low gate switching voltages and low power consumption are easily achieved due to the wide range of redox potentials available in electrochemical materials. In the case of the p-type poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), the conjugated PEDOT allows mobile holes to hop from one chain to another where, in the neutral form, holes are compensated by PSS anions. Major limitations of PEDOT:PSS devices are due to the inherent nature of the material to oxidize, which can impede state retention and cycle stability of a device. In this effort, two different fabrication techniques are implemented to assemble all-solid-state cPECMs: 1) roll-to-roll printing on a flexible substrate with a water soluble, partially reduced self-doped PEDOT (S-PEDOT) and 2) in-situ polymerization of PEDOT through sequential solution spin coating of EDOT monomer over a sulfonated-oxidant mixture. The designed three-terminal devices demonstrate near-linear conductivity tuning via electrochemical doping by means of voltage pulsing to the top presynaptic electrode. The bottom two terminals (i.e., postsynaptic electrodes) display over 1000 observed distinct read states per pulsing cycle with a low power consumption per switching event (ca. 42 pJ/mm2 for a 12 x 20 mm active area). PEDOT cPECMs are implemented to perform arithmetic and simple mathematics, execute information processing such as Boolean logic gates, display electrochromic behaviors, and can emulate essential artificial synaptic plasticities for learning and memory behaviors.
