Consumption of Pt in industrial hydrosilation catalysis is unsustainable, but efforts to develop alternative catalysts based on Earth-abundant first-row transition metals have been hindered by limited information on the nature of 3d M-Si bonds implicated in catalytic mechanisms. Complexes bearing tris-NHC borate ligands are promising candidates for isolating and studying reactive 3d M-Si bonds, but few starting materials are available for forming such bonds via established routes. We report the synthesis of a series of novel tris-NHC borate-ligated complexes designed for such purposes, and discuss efforts to form M-Si bonds via their reaction with silanes and the anionic silyl reagent [K(18-crown-6)SiH3].
