Dr. Jennifer Lewis is a pioneer in several aspects of chemistry education research. She is well known for her work in POGIL, PLTL, instrument development, and the use of elegant quantitative techniques to measure affective constructs in the chemistry classroom. Additionally, Dr. Lewis is intentional about diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that pertain to the classroom and to research. In particular, equity work is something for which she purposefully plans in every aspect of her teaching, mentoring, and research. To this end, my participation in her research group have led to meaningful research results focused on investigations of equitable group comparisons between student racial/ethnic subgroups. Dr. Lewis also approaches her mentoring of graduate students on equitable practices, and supports her students by connecting them with support networks, valuable academic and extracurricular experiences, and exciting funding opportunities to set them up for future success. Overall, Dr. Lewis’ intentional mentoring focused on equity has led and continues to lead to successful doctoral students who continue her legacy in purposeful quantitative research methodologies with a focus on equity in the classroom.
