This lecture will describe my group's recent efforts to develop new approaches to chemical synthesis and catalysis by harnessing unique properties of transition metals. An emphasis of the talk will be on pursuing problems of high potential impact on the biomedical and commodity chemical fields and identifying highly workable solutions to them. In all cases, we seek to elucidate the mechanistic underpinnings of reactivity and selectivity to advance our fundamental understanding of chemical reactivity.
