The catalytic performance of various supported Ru catalysts in hydrogenolysis of low-density polyethylene was investigated, and based on the experimental studies and catalyst characterizations such as XAFS, XRD and TEM, the relationship between catalyst structure and performance was evaluated. The catalytic performance was influenced by the Ru particle size and the direct effect of the type of supports is not so large. The catalytic activity depended on the Ru particle size, and a larger Ru particle size provided a higher turnover frequency (TOF) per the surface Ru metal. As for the selectivity to the gas (C1-4), which are undesirable products in terms of the price, the selectivity gradually increased with increasing the particle size of Ru metals. Therefore, from the viewpoint of the activity and selectivity, moderate Ru sizes around 2-3 nm are preferable for the reaction.
