Phosphines have a long history of utility in organic, inorganic, and organometallic chemistry. Numerous methods are known for their syntheses, but severe limitations remain. Phosphorus-directed C-H borylation provides a direct method to diversify readily available organophosphorus reagents into a variety of derivatives. Phosphine-directed borylation of aryl and benzylic C-H bonds will be discussed along with the phosphonate-directed C-H borylation of arenes. The products of these reactions have been subjected to synthetic applications that utilize the carbon-boron bond to obtain distinct organophosphorus reagents. For this symposium, the nature of the collaboration between a PUI and an R1 research group will be discussed as a successful model.
