Carbonylative copolymerization of ethylene and cyclic ethers described in the graphics below is realized using zwitterionic Ni(II) catalysts.<sup>1</sup> The catalysts are dual-site catalysts, with the Ni(II) site catalyzing coordinative enchainment of ethylene and CO, and the acyl site enabling cationic enchainment of cyclic ethers.<sup>2</sup> The products of the polymerization range from plastics (when y is small) to elastomers (when y is large) depending on the position of the equilibrium between the 4- and 5-coordinate Ni complexes.
