High temperature resin transfer molding (RTM) and additive manufacturing (AM) of composites have many advantages over traditional autoclave prepreg processing, mainly in dimensional tolerances for complex components, reproducibility in manufacturing, and rapid prototyping, which translates to cost savings. The efficient processing of RTM and AM composites and their applications necessitate specific properties of the materials, such as low melt viscosities and high thermo-oxidative stabilities. A unique class of molecules known as helicenes, namely ortho-fused aromatic rings with remarkable optical and mechanical properties, are useful for these high temperature materials and as a potential for strain sensing applications in manufacturing processes. This work evaluates current synthetic progress for high temperature and multifunctional polymeric materials and the synthetic methodologies developed to isolate optically active small molecule precursors and the polymeric materials developed from them.
