The bulky aryloxide ligand OAr* (OAr* = 2,6-Ad2-4-tBu-C6H2O, Ad = 1-adamantyl) has been used to generate thermally stable Ln(II) complexes across the lanthanide series from La to Lu. The trivalent precursors, Ln(OAr*)3, 1-Ln, were synthesized by reacting Ln(NR2)3 (R = SiMe3) with 3 equivalents of HOAr* for Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Yb, and Lu. 1-Ce, 1-Nd, 1-Gd, 1-Dy and 1-Yb were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). Reductions of 1-Ln in THF with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand (crypt) yielded the divalent complexes [K(crypt)][Ln(OAr*)3], 2-Ln, for Ln = Nd, Gd, Dy, Yb and Lu, identified by single-crystal XRD. Reduction of 1-La in THF with KC8 in the presence of 18-crown-6 (18-c-6) yielded [K(18-c-6)][La(OAr*)3, 3-La, also identified by single-crystal XRD. The thermal stability of the divalent complexes 2-Ln and 3-La were assessed using UV-visible spectroscopy.
