This talk will describe the invention, characterization, reactivity, and progress toward commercialization of our diiridium catalyst system for hydrogen release from neat formic acid. The system was the first to be demonstrated to function in neat formic acid, and is known to deliver quantitative, selective conversion of formic acid to hydrogen and carbon dioxide through millions of turnovers accumulated over many cycles of repeated use. This result is enabled by a unique molecular mechanism that remains a target of study. This presentation will summarize the history and development path for this intriguing system.
