The synthesis and characterization of a series of triaryl phosphine ligands (aryl = Ph, 2-thienyl, 2-anisyl) via Grignard chemistry will be presented. By having access to the free phosphine our group has also prepared the related oxide, sulfide and selenide derivatives. The phosphine oxides readily form complexes with lanthanide (III) metals, as evidenced by IR, NMR, MS and X-Ray crystallography. The coordination geometry of these Ln-ligand complexes is influenced by the identity of the metal anion (nitrate vs. triflate).
