It has been shown smoke from residential woodstoves can be a substantial source of particulate matter in those communities, especially in rural mountain valley communities, which also experience sustained temperature inversions in the winter. Woodstove changeouts have been proven to be an effective way to reduce PM2.5 in areas impacted by smoke from woodstoves. Past studies have shown that as much as 90% of the emissions from uncertified woodstoves in Klamath Falls, Oregon is PM2.5, with an emissions inventory of the area showing over 40% of area emissions come from Residential Wood Combustion. In an effort to reach attainment status for PM2.5, agencies in Klamath Falls have been working for over a decade to changeout woodstoves for EPA certified models or to another heating source. The goal of this study was to determine if the woodstove changeouts have impacted PM2.5 concentrations in the past decade. In addition to these results, an analysis of other meteorological parameters (such as temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, and wind speed) and their impact on PM2.5 concentrations in Klamath Falls will also be presented.
