Going green may be touted as a holy grail spanning everything from fuels to sneakers to hair dye to wine, but what does that really mean? How do we move beyond ‘green is good’ as a maxim to a more quantifiable definition in such broad application? I report on development of a new Master’s in Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Innovation at Loyola Marymount University in the College of Business Administration partnered with Seaver College of Science and Engineering with particular focus on my course in Clean Technology. Beginning with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, we explore several current and emerging areas of product development using the lenses of the 12 principles of green chemistry, life cycle analysis, and the circular economy to help quantify our meaning of green. The course is structured to allow chemistry students to work collaboratively on projects with business students to capitalize on their diversity strengthening the scope of insight and creativity in sustainable entrepreneurship from product design to marketing.
