The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is a way of fabricating organic molecules into an extremely thin layer of uniform thickness with a specific internal structure. Linear molecule (dodecyl-phenyl-acrylamide), tripod molecule (tribenzene trisdodecyloxylphenyl oxadiazol), and gradient and block copolymers (octyloxyphenyl & ethyl oxazoline) are investigated by LB, atomic force microscope (AFM), and X-ray reflectivity (XRR). Surface pressure (Π)-surface area (A) isotherms show that each of the molecules has a different limiting area according to the ratio between the hydrophilic part and hydrophobic part. Small molecules and copolymers show different morphologies and differences in conformational changes by intermolecular interactions. Small molecules show crystalline monolayer at the air/water interface, but the copolymers show relatively flexible monolayer. However, both small and large molecules show similar thickness, roughness, and electron density profiles. This study provides the insights to develop novel materials for electronic and biomedical applications such as display and drug delivery.
