Our laboratory investigates the synthesis and utilization of carbohydrates for medical and environmental applications. Undergraduate students actively conduct these experiments, and they are exposed to hands-on, hypothesis-based research in an academic laboratory. This presentation will discuss two of our current research projects. The first project, the synthesis of C-linked glycosides that will be evaluated for the treatment of type II diabetes, is an example of a medical application that tends to attract our students interested in pre-health professions. In the second project, the synthesis of carbohydrate-based compounds that adsorb phosphates from wastewater is explored in an effort to combat eutrophication in the Great Lakes Bay region.
