The COVID-19 pandemic altered how students interacted with each other, faculty and campuses across the country, including at Otterbein University, our small comprehensive university in Ohio. Despite having hybrid offerings we were able to maintain engagement within our ACS Student Chapter. Our inclusive group of students from a variety of science-based majors were able to come together as innovators and a chemistry community to still host fun and engaging events about chemistry while prioritizing the safety of our members and faculty. Some of the events that we developed and hosted are: a Meet the Department game night where faculty, returning, and incoming students were able to mingle virtually; a Coke and Mentos science demonstration and video competition; trivia nights with chemistry-themed prizes; a personal statement writing seminar and summer internship search strategies seminar hosted by chemistry faculty; and multiple events showcasing summer research and internships conducted by students both on and off campus. We also engaged with the Columbus Local ACS Section through networking sessions and monthly meetings that featured guest speakers and panel discussions. As an organization and as individuals, we have won awards honoring our commitment to chemistry and learning.
