As the world moves towards a decarbonized future, negative-emission technologies must be deployed now, though there remain few economic drivers to do so. Recycling CO2 by reconstituting it into fuels and chemicals can be an economic driver to pay for the costs of carbon capture. Conventional approaches of CO2 recycling often omit the high energy and capital costs associated with capturing, purifying and compressing CO2. In this presentation, we describe our vision of a CO2 refinery, i.e. a platform technology that couples solvent-based CO2 capture with catalytic upgrading CO2 captured in the capture solvent to produce a multitude of low-carbon fuels and chemicals. This coupling allows for IC3M to achieve improved costs and efficiency of conventional disparate capture and conversion processes. We detail here, how IC3M allows for production of multiple products to be made from CO2captured in a solvent simply by changing the reagent co-feed and/or catalyst. The ability to produce multiple products enables a platform with superior economic adaptability that single product CCUS approaches cannot achieve. We describe here, a road map of a CO2 refinery that couples solvent-based capture and catalytic upgrading of CO2 to make multiple products. We detail the results of a multidisciplinary research approach, detailing the chemistry, catalysis, thermodynamics and economics of IC3M and its viability in the future of decarbonization.
