Oxide dispersion strenghtened (ODS) stainless steels are currently great candidates for numerous high temperature applications, due to their good corrosion resistance, ductility and oxidation resistance. Powder bed based fusion methods are currently used to fabricate parts of ODS materials in a single step.However, such approaches are relatively costly because of the high power usage. In addition, they may result in laser induced excessive oxidation and residual stresses in the fabricated parts.<br/>In order to overcome these drawbacks, more recent efforts focus on forming ODS parts using direct ink writing (DIW). DIW technology has already been successfully used to form complex structures for single-material. Here an oxide dispersed DIW method is introduced utilizing a multi ink printing set-up. An oxide (i.e., Y2O3) ink is embedded in a 3D printed stainless steel scaffold structure using a spray nozzle system. The deposition processing parameters and their effects on the final part dimensional properties are investigated using a suite of microscopical methods. In addition, the influence of the embedded oxide on stainless steel mechanical properties is investigated using nanoindentation. Finally, the results are compared with conventionally produced parts using powder bed fusion ODS. It is believed that our printing approach may hold the key for developing the next generation ODS parts with controlled dimensions and mechanical properties.
