A semester-long multi-step synthesis laboratory course that incorporates organic synthesis, analytical and instrumental analysis was developed for upper division chemistry and biochemistry students. Students, in teams of 3-4, prepared an active pharmaceutical ingredient in six steps beginning with a simple, commercially available precursor. Using the principles of process chemistry, all intermediates were purified by recrystallization and fully characterized.  In addition to familiarization with approaches to pharmaceutical research, students performed literature searches and background reading on the topics related to the project.  The specific reaction sequence integrated safety considerations, research design, synthetic organic and analytical chemistry, and could be done simply, and rapidlyusing gener al laboratory equipment and inexpensive reagents.
