The gas-phase products of the reaction between aqueous HNO3 and solid NaCl were identified and quantified using IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Utilizing a multicomponent Beer’s law analysis incorporating single wavelength UV-Vis absorption cross-sections and integrated IR absorption cross-sections from the primary literature, the major products of the reaction were determined to be Cl2 and ClNO. Other quantified products were NO2, HCl, ClNO2, N2O, and NO. The product distribution of the reaction is highly dependent on the chloride ion and HNO3 concentration and mechanistic implications are proposed. The results are discussed in light of the atmospheric significance of chlorine, as the detailed chemical mechanisms by which chloride ions are converted to photolyzable chlorine in the troposphere are currently not well understood.
