A two-step synthesis of chalcone dibromides was conducted using an aldol condensation reaction with varying benzaldehydes and acetophenones to form chalcones followed by a green bromination reaction to form chalcone dibromides. The products were purified by recrystallization and characterized using NMR, IR and melting point. The yield of each chalcone dibromide was analyzed to determine the scope of the green bromination reaction. A total of 16 combinations of chalcones and chalcone dibromides were synthesized while also maintain high atom economy. The new green bromination method used was found to be effective compared to traditionally hazardous reagents for dibromide synthesis.
