Sila-adamantane is the heavy atom analog of the organic adamantane that has found ubiquitous applications across medicine, catalysis, and materials science. As sila-adamantane is electronically delocalized, electron rich, and chemically stable, it may find similar applications of use, provided it may be chemically functionalized and incorporated into molecules and materials. This poster describes efforts to explore the reactivity of the passivating silyl-methyl groups that line the silicon cluster core with a broad panel of strong oxidizing and superacidic agents. These approaches will enable subsequent functionalization as well as the fine-tuning of its physical properties.
