Dr. Bettye Washington-Greene was the first African-American female Ph.D. chemist employed in a professional position at The Dow Chemical Company. Dr. Greene earned her doctorate in physical chemistry with Wilfried Heller at Wayne State, publishing her doctoral dissertation in 1965 entitled "Determination of Particle Size Distributions in Emulsions by Light Scattering".  During her career at Dow, Dr. Greene made key contributions in colloid and interfacial science for industrial applications.  This included advances in the in-situ polymerization of surface active agents to improve the stability of commercially important styrene-butadiene latexes, fundamental studies on latex-clay interactions for paper coating applications, definition of latex interactions with different fibers, and the development of redispersible latexes.   This talk will highlight Dr. Washington-Greene’s career and her impact in industrially important applications of colloidal science.
