Acid dissociation constants Ka = [MLmn-1][H+]/[MHLmn] of transition metal hydride complexes MHLmn in aprotic solvents span an enormous range, being very sensitive to nature of the ligands L and the electronic state of the metal M. The empirically derived LAC equation allows one to easily estimate the pKa of most diamagnetic and low spin paramagnetic transition metal hydride complexes with common types of ligands by adding contributions from each donor and correcting for the charge of the deprotonated complex and the extra stability provided by d6 octahedral hydrides and 5d metals. This lecture will describe the use of this equation in understanding the reactions of transition metal hydrides in electrochemistry and catalysis.
