Novel hydrogel beads of graphene oxide-polyethylenimine-polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel (GPPH) beads are synthesised via Microwave-assisted route. XPS and FT-IR analysis confirm the functionalisation of GO sheets with amine and amide moieties while BET substantiates slightly mesoporous morphology of the beads. The presence of GO in these beads is confirmed by the HRTEM images along with SAED pattern. GPPH has 809.82 μmol g–1 phenolic, 906.65 μmol g–1 lactonic and 756.69 μmol g–1 carboxylic groups which quantified by Boehm titration. X-ray Diffractogram and thermograms of GPPH show lower degree of crystallinity and greater thermal stability in comparison to pristine PVA. GPPH has been used for the removal of a variety of dyes such as azo , triarylmethane, xanthene dyes. The sorption of dyes to GPPH occurs mainly due to electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, non-covalent interactions and pore diffusion and is highly pH dependent. The adsorbent has good reusability as it could be reused effectively upto 5 times by regenerating with 0.1 mol L–1 HCl solution. Moreover, fixed-bed column adsorption studies with GPPH removes 77% (reactive orange), 75% (eosin yellow) and 56% (brilliant green) of dyes. Moreover, the column of GPPH is also reusable which shows that the adsorbent has good commercial applicability and could be used as a filter for dye removal.
