Pillar-[n]-arenes have become pivotal macrocycles with a rapidly increasing range of applications. In this presentation we outline the development of our work in this field, starting from the formation of rim-differentiated pillar-[5] arenes [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2018, 140, 74] via the formation and host-guest chemistry of tiara-[5]-arenes [Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2020, 59, 3994] to more recent mechanistic and dynamics studies.
