The experiences of students in the chemistry teaching lab touch on a variety of cognitive challenges. This complex learning environment influences the extent to which students attend to various aspects of the learning experience in the laboratory. An example of a laboratory learning component that may be overlooked by students is the role of instruments used in measurement. In particular, awareness of the extent to which technical instrumentation influences the generation of scientific knowledge and is applied to the application of technology in society may not be developed for many students. This talk presents results of a study using both survey and interview sources about student persectives on this broader understanding of instruments and their role in the development of science and the student understanding of science.
