Thermal approaches, including incineration and pyrolysis, are effective methods of destroying hazardous organics and reducing the waste volume. The U.S. EPA has identified thermal treatment as one of three technological solutions that are commercially available and have the capacity to degrade or manage the migration of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in contaminated materials. However, much less attention has been given to volatile species generated during the thermal treatment of PFAS and other fluorinated compounds. To fill this knowledge gap, we carried out this study to systematically investigate thermal decomposition products of PFAS. Several novel observations were made, and the results of this work contribute to the relevant literature in multiple dimensions.
