The Barry University Chemistry Club/ACS Student Chapter engages in a range of activities throughout the academic year, some of which include community outreach, professional development, and social events. The club hosts numerous speakers, including faculty and alumni, from whom members learn about research and careers. A “Summer Research Seminar” event is hosted, where selected members present their research carried out over the last summer, at Barry or other universities. The seminar also serves as a way for other members to get connected to future summer research opportunities. Numerous members also present their research at the Barry University STEM Symposium. Additionally, Chemistry Club members host a booth for National Chemistry Week (NCW) where they raise chemistry awareness through demos. Members perform NCW demos to hundreds of children and adults in museums in Broward and Miami and take part in SoFLACS meetings and competitions. The club also prides itself in supporting members in their academic lives and striving for excellence. Club members also participate in promoting environmental issues through events like Barry Earth Day Fair, Climate Strike rally, MLK Day of Service, as well as community service activities organized by the university, such as beach clean-ups, and community outreach activities, such as the COACH program where through a partnership with under-resourced schools, members inspire the students’ interest in science by exploring topics in science and experiments. The club encourages making contacts and social interactions through events like science trivia, movie nights, Halloween events, scavenger hunts, and speaker events. At the end of the semester, the Chemistry Club helps in organizing an end-of-semester party, where awards for outstanding performances are given out and everyone reflects on the semester.
