Polyphosphazenes are among the few synthesized macromolecular systems that are based on an inorganic backbone. The side groups, R, can be organic, inorganic, or organometallic units or combinations of all three. In principle, the number of different side groups and side group combinations makes this potentially one of the widest range of structures and properties available in synthetic macromolecular chemistry. So far approximately 300 of these have been studied in detail. This talk will review the synthetic options, how the different structures influence properties and uses, and priorities for the immediate future. Special attention will be given to organometallic, organosilicon, and fluorinated side groups, with an emphasis on the biomedical, catalytic, and engineering aspects.
