Mixed ionic-electronic conduction has recently gained a great deal of attention in future electronic devices ranging from artificial synapses, electrochromic displays, e-skins, and smart prosthetics.  In most of these applications, ionic intercalation followed by a change in the conductance of the semiconducting bulk is the key mechanism that enables a multi-directional future especially for organic materials (organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors or OMIECs). Amongst excellent ionic hosts that also conduct electronic charge are conjugated polymers and 2D porous organic frameworks. My research interests are to design and process organic semiconductors and demonstrate their functionalities specifically in ionically gated electrochemical devices. In this symposium, I will share my past research work on the design and processing of conjugated polymer blends, as well as 2D semiconducting thin films. I will highlight how the versatility in device design enabled by mixed ionic-electronic conduction has allowed a wide range of applications from electrochemical sensors to memory devices. I will also highlight how I aim to utilize such novel organic materials in my future research for generating programmable non-volatile currents to emulate biological synaptic behaviors.
