Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) are among the most fascinating families of solid-state material, because of their highly tunable compositions, structures, and properties. In this presentation, strategies for the synthesis of new porous MOFs will be discussed, with the focus on the use of different metal ions and their various combinations. In addition, the talk will cover our recent efforts and strategies developed on functionalizing MOF for enhancing gas sorption through pore space partitioning and engineering. The development of the optimum pore architectures for enhanced gas sorption will be covered. To maximize the pore space utilization, we are also pursuing a unique synthetic paradigm that is based on the delicate pore space partition by using complementary coordination properties of multitopic ligands and open metal sites.<br/>Another semiconducting porous material I would like to present is the self-assembly of metal chalcogenide tetrahedral clusters with uniform pore sizes and high surface area. The single-sized tetrahedral clusters act as building blocks to form well-ordered three-dimensional superlattices. The diversity of superlattices is achieved by modifying the cluster size, the cluster composition, and the inter-cluster linkage mode. These porous semiconducting materials exhibit high surface area and uniform porosity. They can be used as interesting catalytic and photocatalytic materials for converting water and carbon dioxide into useful chemicals, as well as electrocatalytic materials for oxygen reduction reaction.
