Many of the catalytic transformations involved in the conversion of chemicals and biomass-derived intermediates are carried out in the liquid phase or solvents that can significantly influence the rates, selectivities and the mechanisms that drive different catalytic transformation. Solvents can significantly influence the active sites and the local environments that carry specific catalytic transformations. Solvents can act to stabilize or destabilize reaction intermediates and transition states and can be intimately involved in co-catalyzing reactions. In this talk, we examine selective hydrogenation of phenol over Pt within zeolites in the presence of protic solvents. We show that protic solvents work together with local Br<b>ø</b>nsted acidity provide ideal environments at the Pt metal surface to promote proton-coupled-electron transfer paths that can significantly enhance the rates for the selective hydrogenation of phenol.
