Aliphatic carbon-carbon (C-C) bond cleavage reactions of first row metal enolate complexes are of current interest for many applications including developing new reaction pathways and for delivering small molecules in biological environments. We are currently examining the properties of [(bpy)2Co(enolate)]ClO4 complexes where the enolate is either a chlorodiketonate or extended flavonolato ligand. The former complexes undergo light-driven reactivity in the presence of O2 to produce aliphatic C-C bond cleavage products in a reaction similar to that found for Cu(II) chlorodiketonate complexes under thermal conditions. The Co(II) flavonolato complex undergoes reaction with excess H2O2 in the presence of visible light resulting in CO release. Details of the synthesis, characterization and reaction pathways of these [(bpy)2Co(enolate)]ClO4 complexes will be discussed.
